Having tried everything suggested here and in Google. I found that the Intel ALC272 chip was working, but only with "Dragon Player" - no VLC etc and system sounds. Decided to re-install all things "Alsa" using Synaptic. Hey presto! everything works perfectly. Hope this may be of help:) -- W.
