I upload photos and movies to Flickr immediately after syncing them off the camera (it is a bit slow at uploading but not a problem for me). As a result I'm reasonably confident of retrieving photos even if something really bad happens to the house/computer. I also print the best photos, but they are mostly kept in the house as well.... I would suggest either a general purpose back-up services, or one of the photo sharing sites - simply because their volume makes them relatively cheap even if you never share. Aside from speed Flickr has been good. But I suspect if you are burning DVDs or using external USB freely, then you might be confident of using one of the free services. Is Picasa any good for this. My email is on a mail server, and that is backed-up locally using rsync daily, and spooled to external USB on a weekly basis. The software I use is readilly retrievable from Debian, so if the worst happened I'd lose some templates, some old documents, some odds and sods, and a lot of high-scores for various logic puzzles. Of course the "new worst" is someone being malicious rather than the house being burnt down or otherwise destroying the 3 hard disks with all my personal data.
