I've got a large set of external drives. The Western Digital ones are really good --- both the USB-powered Passport range (I've got some 320Gb ones, but I think they do larger ones too), and the AC-powered Elements range.
I've had problems with USB-powered LaCie disks that needed too much power (I was trying to use them with a laptop).
