In Debian one can straight "reinstall" which will (depending on config) ask if you want to reset any config files to default. If he wants to try and work around the problem this way, Debian Squeeze has gdm3, but there is no guarantee it won't fail the same way, and gdm3 may need to be installed manually after an upgrade.
