Not quite as Alex's question (I think) intends: It's easy enough to write software _for_ the iPhone/Pod/Pad on a Mac, and XCode and the SDK are free-as-in-beer, but as a matter of official Apple policy ("no interpreters") it's more or less impossible to write and execute a program _on_ the iPhone/Pod/Pad -- an astonishing "achievement" for a BSD-derived OS.
