Although I do have standard ubuntu installed I launch all my programs from the command line and am forever using a handy utility called gauke (press F12 and u get a command line - press it again and it's gone). http://guake.org/ Most lecture notes I take are in nano. My todo list, address book and diary are all from the command line... When I get time (end of uni!) I too am thinking about debian with lxde or less.
