Sounds like you have one of the tools (network-manager probably) set to overwrite resolv.conf in one mode of operation but not the other. Do you perchance has static settings at home, but rely on DHCP elsewhere? I'm afraid I just purged network-manager so I can't quickly check it's settings. But whichever tool you need to accept DNS server changes from DHCP on laptops as you have to trust the network you connect to knows how to provide DNS correctly.
