From top:Firefox isn't as bad as Thunderbird, to be honest. Thunderbird is currently using more than 1GB and will get up to close to 2GB during a day. java (for Eclipse) is a shade under 1GB before even starting to use it. I have the Ad Block Plus, Firebug and Selenium plugins configured in Firefox, but that's only using around 500MB.
Seriously - you're solving the wrong problem. Thunderbird is obviously a pile of croc if it's running at 1-2GB for a days run. It's only an email client FFS.
Eclipse is a Java based IDE, AIUI... Again, you're solving the wrong problem - if that sort of application needs 1GB of RAM it's seriously screwed up.
This is the sort of rubbish that gives MS a bad name, but look, it's polluting Linux.
