It's surprising how much power some systems take. The old 3GHz P4 processors were pretty bad, AFAIR. I'd recommend a power meter any time though. I used one to measure all sorts of stuff around our house and decided that I didn't need to do anything about some appliances that I thought would be bad, but was horrified to find out how much power others were using.
