Hi folks,Looks like Google has done what was speculated, they have open sourced the VP8 codec which they recently bought for $124.6 million from On2 Technologies. It's been combined with OGG Vorbis to create a new open source format called WebM.
If I understand correctly, OGG Theora was based on an earlier version of the codec (something like VP3) which Google said wasn't suitable for things like Youtube, but with any luck this new WebM format will gain enough market share to see off H264, or at least be accepted by Apple and Microsoft (it's already been accepted by Mozilla and Opera).
