I've been trawling around online and I haven't seen anyone mention this problem anywhere, so I'm beginning to suspect it might just be a bugbear from the upgrade process and I'm going to try a clean install when I get a chance to see if that helps.
Just to reply to my own post, I've just finished doing a fresh install of 10.04 Ubuntu Netbook Remix and it seems to be working 100% out of the box. So it seems all my problems were in fact related to the upgrade.
