If you've got PulseAudio installed, try running it with padsp (it's an OSS wrapper for PulseAudio). Or if you have Alsa installed, try aoss (or try both?).
aoss is in the package: alsa-oss (at least on Ubuntu), not sure about padsp as Ubuntu has Pulse already installed by default.
