I use ext2 for removable media (ie USB HDD 80GB), and works OK; but I agree with Gordon: it's not as easy as just using VFAT. You can tweak ext2 to be a good choice for removable media, but it's not easy and not the main purpose of the filesystem. ext3, ext4 and any other fs with journaling should be discarded, because those extra writes/reads are a bad idea for the life span of the disk.
