Not a bad idea, I guess you could use the built in screen for your e-mail and the external screen for everything else (I did this yesterday for instance with my laptop, one screen for reading a PDF manual, and another screen for working on), did get a bit confusing at times though when the mouse pointer went between the screens.
Plus you can also take it with you when you go out etc and have your machine right there ready to use (okay I wouldn't say the 10" netbooks are pocket sized, but at least they're reasonably small).
