Basically when the power goes off the laptop (should assuming the battery is okay) keep it running. It wouldn't however keep your router and other non-USB powered devices running but it's handy if you have a power failure and you're right in the middle of something which hasn't been saved.
A UPS isn't that expensive now, even a basic one that would give around 15 minutes charge is pretty cheap (around £40 to £50).
