As an alternative to a laptop you may care to buy a Foxconn Bare Bones from microdirect f.inst. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/43480/Foxconn-barebone-PC-system-R10-G4---LGA775. I have two one with XP and one with Kubuntu. You may then use your existing keyboard, monitor etc and get a new PC for less than £100. Have a look and judge whether this is useful for you.
Not a bad little system, memory is reasonably cheap (possibly around £15 per gigabyte) and Celeron/Pentium Dual Core CPUs aren't too bad either.
