Most importantly, this change is not open for negotiation. I am not open to protest or complaint and replies of annoyance will be ignored - if your response is not constructive, don't send it. The abuse of a few have caused permanent and irrevocable harm to all; blame the spammers using our site to push illegal content, not me. The DCGLUG site is not Wikipedia, we don't have the resources to deal with automated abuse. I tried allowing users to create new accounts; no more. It appears that "authenticated user" is no better than anonymous and that the bugs in the old site joining-up page had a useful side-effect. So: 1. No more website accounts will be allowed without the personal intervention of an administrator. 2. Existing members have been moved to a new category with more or less the same privileges as before. Members with higher privileges have had those privileges retained. 3. Authenticated users have almost no privileges any more. 4. Dozens of users have been deleted. 5. Dozens of pages and books have been deleted. 6. Some users who I could not identify from their account details have been blocked and have been kept as "authenticated". 7. At some undetermined point in the future, new users creation might be re-enabled but only to the point where a user can create an account and do absolutely nothing else. 8. If your account has been blocked or deleted, you need to write to one of the admins with your full name and from an email address which you have used on the mailing list in the last three weeks (counting back from the date you send the email). Hostile or aggressive emails will not get you a new account. Convenience is the enemy of security - to make the site maintenance manageable, convenience has had to be sacrificed. I am sorry it has had to be done but it did and it has. That is all. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ http://e-mail.is-not-s.ms/
