You referred me to a help file which was useful for understanding how udev works. I have certainly learnt something through all this. I eventually recognised the correct line in /etc/udev/permissions.rules to which to add the mode rule (MODE="0666"). I made this small change in that file and logged out and then in again. Now /dev/lp0 has the permissions that I need and the printer is working properly. Great.
