I've only ever used notebooks at home. Main reason was size - you can put them away, and potentially work anywhere in the house if you have wi-fi. Also found it very useful to have a computer with batteries, as we live in an area that is very prone to power cuts: no need for a UPS. Started off with a Dell Inspiron 5100 (originally with XP pro before I "upgraded" to Linux) Latest is a Lenovo N500-5 bought direct from Linux-Emporium with Ubuntu pre-installed. I have used a separate USB keyboard with both of them, as I do a lot of number-crunching and need a numeric keypad. I am considering getting a larger separate LCD screen though, for graphics and CAD work, but didn't want a larger screen laptop as portability was also important.
