I tend to use 'mplayer' (from the command-line at that) and I have found that some DVD movie discs will not play with: $ mplayer dvd:// Instead I need to use: $ mplayer dvd-nav:// It would seem (but I may be incorrect in this) that there are two sets of DVD-movie library-type-things around in general use on Linux - dvd-nav being one of them. It might be worth checking out in your application's settings (I don't know what you're using) to see what it's using to read DVD movie discs, and change it.
