Maybe you should say for instance, <Insert favourite distro here> is a varient of the Linux operating system tailored for desktop and laptop PCs. There are other versions of Linux available for different specific tasks, with versions of Linux even install inside your DVD player/Bluray player, or even mobile phone or fridge.
