Not sure about SuSE, but I'm pretty certain installing the package ubuntu-restricted-extras on Ubuntu does the trick. Then there's also Medibuntu which is fairly easy to install.Young and Old. Biggest problem is getting DVDs playing on a new convert's Linux systems. No DVD play on insert - they don't want to know. PS also me, I had DVDs working in SUSE 11.1 but not yet got it sorted in 11.2. As I did a new install rather than an upgrade by choice.
On the Debian side of things I believe there is Debian Multimedia, and I gather there is something similar for Fedora.
In fact, I believe there is even a commercial DVD player package available for Linux too (can't remember if it's Intervideo or Cyberlink that sell it, I think it's Interlink of WinDVD fame).
Not to mention that Windows doesn't play much out of the box on a fresh install.
