Gather you didn't click on the Ebay link then, 99p for an adapter which is actually cheaper than the chips at the local place by 31p...

Expensive chips then, cheapest I've found is about £1.60 for an adapter, I can get a whole portion of chips for that, and maybe a sausage if I'm lucky :-)
I wouldn't suggest trying to plug a chip into a USB socket though, it might get a bit mushy.
