I got fed up years back trying to upgrade my PC to play the latest games. My brother in law has just bought a flashy new PC (although I can't determine what he has, all he knows is it's a 'Pentium Quad Core' with 'two graphics cards). I'm guessing he's got either a Phenom II X4 or a Core i5/i7. Personally I can't see the attraction, games consoles do the job for me without having to worry about compatibility or running Windows. If you ask me, I'm happy still playing Duke Nukem 3D and Doom death matches. On that note, does anyone know if it's possible to run DOOM over LTSP on older spec machines? RobDidn't doom use IPX as the networking protocol, I had a program called doom connector once, it allowed upto 32 players online :) there is also doom legacy, which gives fog, and ability to look up / down, adds a little more life to the game, Not sure how to get stuff playing over ltsp, Paul
DOOM did use IPX back in the day but since the source code was released the networking now supports TCP/IP. Not sure about Duke Nukem 3D though.
I did a bit of reading up, it appears that some X games will work okay (things like FreeCiv) as they don't use much CPU or graphics power, but I gather that anything graphically intensive probably won't work so well unless they are run on the clients as local applications (so it might be possible to get DOOM up and running).
