Previous version is 9.04 btw.

If you have the CD you can boot from that , run the CD based system and 
grab the xorg.conf.

You may even get joy from booting a 9.10 CD and grabbing that xorg.conf 
if it works.

Previously I've had success booting knoppix and using the xorg.conf 
generated there - they seem to do more testing at boot time to get a 
useful conf file. There may be an issue there with Ubuntu 9.10 possibly 
using a newer X.org that knoppix.

Well my plan of nicking xorg.conf from 9.04 worked.Unfortunately installing
9.04 took out my windows even though I told it to put the boot loader on its
own partition.
Still all's back in and running well.
