Sure, it might be handy, but it's Google, which means it'll do things it's own
way, a la gmail, gmane etc.
The biggest difference here is that those examples were the Google implementation of existing protocols. What's intersting about this is that it's a completely new protocol and will (eventually) be opened up for people to make their own implementations. They've also publicly stated that they'll be releasing their implementation as open source once it's ready.
