Subject: [LUG] FTP Backups and XP

Hi All

Does anyone know of a distro or programme that will allow me to set up
an ftp backup system. I want to be able to grab data (documents and
settings) from a users computer and upload this to an ftp server.

If this is not possible I can automate the backup to go from XP to a
Linux distro and from there to the ftp backup.

I want to automate as much as possible.

Thanks for the replies from everyone. The ftp is very external
(located in Bodmin, we're in Lostwithiel). I am concerned because our
current system is trying to back up during the night and not getting
it done! So I was hoping to automate as much as possible at the weekend.

The programme that was suggested to me allows backup locally. Maybe it
would be better to back up locally at say 6pm everyday. Locally it
would be fast and then use Linux to then sync by ftp from 7pm and
overnight. What sync programme would you recommend please (gui if
possible). Thanks

Rich

I'd suggest you look at SFTP or maybe rsync for secure connections if
it's an external server over the internet.

How much data are you talking about?

The daily data is emails and is under 1gb per machine (about 15). The actual data needing backup at first is 150gb of which we're looking at needing to sync about 2/3gb daily.

Thanks

Rich

So it will be say, 12 to 15GB of data to be backed up over night?

The thing is, you have to consider, your upload speed could be anything from 64kbit/sec (8KBytes/sec) to 832kbit/sec (104KBytes/sec). This depends on your connection, if it's a fixed speed and not up to 8 Meg connection it could be fixed at 256kbit/sec (32Kbytes/sec).

So if I've got my calculations correct you do want to send say 12GB (for sake of argument, 12,000MB) of data, at the highest possible speed of 832kbit/sec you'd be looking at 30 hours or so.

Maybe you'd be better off looking at other solutions such as a couple of USB hard drives to backup the data, or if you're talking about doing backups at Marbel, maybe another solution would be to backup to a remote machine in your office via wireless (it might be possible to get a decent enough wireless signal from your office to the Marbel building).
