Which is why they should use a separate downloader, so the updates are installed when available not when you start using the program. When booting the machine and regularly from then on would be fine for most people, especially for relatively small things like extensions. Debian appears to have many of the most popular extensions available as system wide modules to install. Although then you are waiting for the maintainer and Debian release cycle, on the other hand it should all just work....
