An upgrade on one of my secondary machines left me with an unbootable system. Reverting to my previous hand built-kernel only got me as far as a recovery shell as /proc failed to mount. My own fault really. Both fstab and grub menu.lst had old-style device names in (non-uuid) The latest grub now expects /dev/hd* to be named /dev/sd* After editing menu.lst and fstab all is well.
