MANY THANKS a) used systemrescuecd to boot into machine (using "rescuecd root=auto") That got me as boot and with a huge sigh of relief into my system b) aptitude purge grub (cleared all various tinkerings) c) aptitude install grub, installed grub2 from scatch and accepted defaults d) vim /boot/grub/device.map and then changed sda1 to hda e) Reinstalled the latest kernel (as part of all the above I had somehow removed the kernel from /boot/ f) Restarted machine That is enough of a scare for one night. Now to back up my hard-drive before I do anymore damage -- Henry Photocopies or faxes of my signature are not binding.
