I have been offered a second-hand Acer 5633 WLMi laptop at a very reasonable price. I have thoughts of using it as a sort of test bed for new versions of Kubuntu as they appear, and to play around with while still keeping my desktop. Does anyone on the list have any comments or recommendations about this please? I have made no commitment to it, so I have time to decide what to do. Many thanks Neil Winchurst
Neil, I bought a Foxconn barebone R10-S3 from Microdirect now £95.50. It needs memory and harddrive and perhaps a CD drive. Microdirect have other models from Asus and Shuttle at similar prices. My Foxconn runs fast with 1Gb RAM and I got a 80Gb HDD from the chaps at Quinceborough. I use an external USB CD drive and installed Kubuntu 9.04. All very satisfactory if you have a spare monitor and a few bits like a HDD lying around ;-) John W -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
