Hi I'm having a problem with the internet on my Mum's PC. It's running ubuntu 9.04 and is a bog standard 32 bit 386 machine. Intermittently internet connections become really slow, taking ages to load a site or sometimes timing out before the page can be loaded. Her PC is connected directly to the router by cable. My PC upstairs in a different section of the house is cabled to a linksys router, flashed with an app called tomato, to pick up the main routers wifi signal. My connections to the same sites at roughly the same time are nice and fast. (It runs kubuntu 9.04 and is a newer machine with a better spec, but I'm sure that this type of thing is nothing to do with it, Mum's PC is by no means a crap machine). I ran a test from speedtest.net and the only real difference was that on my PC the site pages loaded instantly where as on hers it took about 45 seconds to load. Speed as mbps and ping time were pretty much identical. However a ping from the command line worked perfectly on my PC, but lost 26% of the packets on hers. I changed the cable to the router and immediately all was well - for a few days. Now things is back the way they was. Intermittent slow downs and time outs. I think, with no real proof, that the problem is something in the immediate environment. Anyone have any ideas about what could be happening? This is driving me absolutely nuts. Eternal gratitude and a slug of your beverage of choice (even if I have to post it to you!) to anyone who can shed light on the problem.
