On Windows you can use Nero Drive Speed to send ASPI commands to the drive to slow it down, god knows how to do it in Linux, however mplayer does have the option to specify the DVD read-speed (and CD read speed too). Just use the switch -dvd-speed X where X is either a speed in KB/sec such as about 1350 for 1X DVD speed or X could also be the DVD speed in rating, so 2 for 2X speed (I'm assuming mplayer is inteligent to realise that we haven't got 1350X Speed DVD drives yet). You do need write access to the device though to be able to get mplayer to fix the speed, and I'm not sure if it just covers mplayer for that instance or if it sets it until the machine is rebooted or it's reset to another speed. By the way, Grant with regards to the PS2 being noisy though, take it you haven't used an XBOX 360 for DVD playback? ;-) Now THAT's noisy! (big noisy fans!)
