Bearing in mind that what generally goes with games is windows, with it's NTFS disk format... fragmentation is very very probable. Another thing is that CF cards and flash IDE drives while having the lower access time are slower than a HDD at sequential reads/writes, unfortunately games are generally a combination of huge reads that are scattered all over the place, making CF/IDE flash drives a tradeoff as opposed to a straight improvement.
