So basically about 50 to 60KB/sec?

I'd say that's about 10 times more than what you'd get on a dialup modem.

Ouch that's a bit pricey. My BT Total Broadband should be about £17 or
so a month. Granted that is a home connection but due to the fact I'm
on ADSL Max I can get up to 8 MBit (which on my line is about 7 MBit or
700KB/sec) down and around 400kbit up (or about 40KB).

Doing a check with the phone number in your signature by using the BT
Wholesale checker it suggests you can get a fixed rate broadband speed
of about 1 Meg with an engineer visit or using ADSL Max up to about 1.5 Meg.

2G is very slow dialup speed, you'd be lucky to get any more than about
3 or 4KB/sec. 3G will give you possibly around 700KBit/sec on a good
stong signal, maybe more and 3G+ is HSDPA which is said to give up to
7MBit/sec if you get a good signal but I've never got near that on my
Vodafone connection.

Going on what Orange have said, I would avoid going for mobile
broadband, at least for now unless you could possibly get something that
you can return if you can't get 3G reception.
