When I had a look, it was bog-standard 2Mb leased lines (and maybe 8Mb
ones to secondarys). RM were involved, as was BT, so I suspect it fed into
some MPLS type network to do the actual plumbing and backhaul to some
head-end and onto the global Internet.

It's not rocket science, and personally not sure I'd bother with MPLS, but
a lot will boil down to cost. There are now good deals to be had on LAN
extensions, and even fixed-price 2Mb lines back to London from anywhere in
the country, so there are many options avalable outside of ADSL.

I know that the people who were doing the install were piggy-backing 2Mb
lines inside a town where fesable - eg. to a small number of primary
schools using EPS8 curcuits - this is a 2 or 4 wire "dry copper" circuit,
bridged at the exchange - that's what we had from the primary school to
our HQ (cybercafe) in Buckfastleigh. Relatively cheap at the time.
Wouldn't be surprised if BT were doing away with them now...
