Hi Kevin I think I have cured the problem, although I don't know what happened. Older daughter uses Kde 4.2. I mainly use Gnome, with Compiz enabled. I think the problem first occured after I used Kde the other day. I rebooted into Xfce (which I also have installed) where the fonts were fine. I then rebooted into Gnome and the fonts were back to normal, but Compiz was off. So there are various options to investigate, but I suspect it is a conflict between Kde and Gnome configuration files. I'll dig into it further to see if I can find out which configuration file was being damaged, and report back to the list if I do (in case anyone else has the same problem.)
