It turned out to be 2 things. First, is there an open network connection between the 2 boxes (I use NFS)? Second, find out how CUPS works. As Kevin says, manage it through a browser window but the address is http://localhost:631 not 633. You definitely need to know what the address of the printer on the Mac is.
