I keep one amd64 dual core desktop running 24/7 with adsl router (tiny usage) and one hub (ditto). I've usually got my balloon3 running (<1W) too. Speakers have individual power switches that are *not* standby. > I used to leave the server on until I got a Kill-a-Watt meter and ran > about the house testing consumption and cost of various items - I have a meter too but I only notice any significant issues when the microwave is in use. Every other appliance rarely changes the meter by more than 0.1 - often less than 0.05. > it was a > real eye opener and we reduced our electricity consumption to one third > of its previous rate by simple expedient of switching stuff off and > taking oodles of stuff off standby by deadswitching it, often using > blocks of extension leads to join all related items up onto a single > above skirting board level switch. > > If I was rewiring the house again we'd be putting all electric switches > at dado rail height and damn the appearances! If I was rewiring the house, I'd add about 24 new power sockets - providing at least four double sockets per room - and Cat5 to every room (at least two sockets in the lounge and office). I'd also find a way to completely hide the pesky telephone/ADSL cable. Problem is, I no longer have any time to do any of that. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ http://e-mail.is-not-s.ms/
