Sounds like something seriously wrong (or the machine is out of memory).

You'd have to look at it, check the logs, check output of top.

CD's should rip in a few minute on modern CD drives as they are usually
52x or similar speeds.

Worth also using hdparm or similar to see what the write speed is, if it
plays the CD fine as a straight audio player.

Worth also trying a different CD, just in case it is one with some
broken copy protection mechanism or similar.
