Crashing when trying to open a recent document is a common problem. The work around is to download seamonkey and use composer, which has much of the same functionality. There is a way of opening seamonkey in composer mode by changing the properties in /system/preferences/main menu to "seamonkey --webeditor" or similar (it isn't that I can't remember what it should be).
