Many years ago I bought a Canon CanoScan FS2700 which could take slides and negatives (I have a large collection of both) with the intention of scanning in all my old material.. Well - apart from a bit of enthusiasm when I first got it, it's mostly gathered dust. (Although I did have ause for it a few months ago - glad to find it still worked!) The problem is that it's just too labour intensive. Scanning, touching up, filing, etc. So basically I gave up and made the switch to a digital cameras there and then. If you're going to get a scanner, get one that you can load up a whole tray of slides at once, and get one with an IR scanner for automatic dust removal, otherwise you'll spend the rest of your life scanning and touching them up.. And although it's not free, have a look at VueScan - I have a copy (it cost me $40 at the time), but was infinitely better than anything else I found (eg. SANE) - especially in a "workflow" situation where you're trying to scan slide after slide, etc... http://www.hamrick.com/ Good luck with whatever you choose...
