I have upgraded many debian and ubuntu systems and managed to resolve any issues (and yes, there have been issues on debian as well as ubuntu) however the OP said he'd had problems with that specific upgrade previously. His options include trying the upgrade again and try to resolve whatever issues come up, live with what he has, upgrade the packages as he wanted and expect breakage or odd behaviour or something else - which might well be installing debian. But the last option isn't a panacea. The others are reasonable. Just because upgrades are supposed to work, doesn't mean they _always_ do.
