Such as what kind of VPN (as well as if this needs to be via a known group of machines e.g. the two laptops or any random Internet connected machine.) What protocols are used for serving these apps? What does "access to the Internet" actually equate to? If it's web browsing or email then they probably don't need direct internet access. Indeed having your email on an IMAP server means that emails arn't being stored on individual workstations. > The boss wants to dump everything into one server so they can remove > the file server but I am assuming that it will be more secure if we > can keep things separate. I am also unsure of the best way to set up Putting everything on one box not only has possible security issues from the "hacker" POV it also has security issues from the POV of what happens if things break. Whilst you can get machines with multiple hot swappable PSUs if you want the likes of hot swappable CPUs and memory you arn't going to find these with PC style hardware. Even if the fileserver is struggling replacing if with a more powerful machine/bigger disks may be easier than trying to stuff everything onto one machine. > the remote access element because this server will also be serving the > intranet. This is probably also easier to impliment remote access/VPN on a separate box. Which is effectivly a glorified router. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFJMW5usoRLMhsZpFcRAnLeAKCb1F+BqgcMoc4LWBq7OiTmhvBBdACghQVc x9xJz45lcY3uRfM4p3ULTqI= =4VLS -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
