I'll understand either way, I have this RAID card.... Simon I know and have tried. Indeed this is where the problem lies. It's the same trick that was used to get the cards using 8197 working before kernel support. However it does not work on id 8198 unles a modified ndiswrapper or driver is also used. There are people on the ubuntu forum and launchpad who are in the same boat. However , thanks for the link and I will investigate. I must admit there is more of a "sense of achievement" when editing/hacking files which was how I got my tv card and scanner to work. I keep a script backed up to set these up within minutes of installing a different distro just so I don't have to go through the hours of searching and configuring again.
