While on the subject of hard drives, particularly high capacity ones, I'd like to bring your attention to SpinRite in case you haven't come across it already. It's the only non-free software that I ever recommend to anyone. See http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm for details, but in brief, it's a hard drive maintenance and repair tool for use with x86 PCs. It has a well established track record as the most effective tool at successfully recovering data from ailing hard drives, fixing blue-screen-on-boot scenarios [1], and even fixing dead Tivos and iPods. SpinRite is the kind of tool that goes unthought of until the fateful day when all your precious data is suddenly inaccessible to you and it comes along and quietly saves you bacon. If the testimonials don't convince you, anyone in striking distance of Horrabridge is welcome to a demo. Steve.
