It's a free download (like VMWare Server) although still proprietary. It has it's own mini OS (Linux based I think) and you'd be able to run Linux in a VM on top of it. I'd suggest that as a last resort though. Another option, I believe some Tyan boards are supported by Coreboot (which was LinuxBIOS). That might be an option too if you have a compatible motherboard.
