Posted by "Anthony Gist" <tony@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Just a quick heads-up as I see we have had a mention! TGtraining runs community-based (out-reach) courses through-out north/mid Devon and north Cornwall. The majority of our courses are Windows based, as that is where the primary demand is at present. However, where appropriate Open Source software is used for all our courses. Open Office for office courses, GIMP for photo editing, Inkscape for vector graphics, etc. Open Source software has a number of distinct advantages students. Firstly, students who learn in â??traditionalâ?? environments invariably have to learn on proprietary software, for example, MS Office, Photoshop Elements, etc. irrespective of what the student has installed at home or in the office. On numerous occasions in the past I found myself leading courses using software that students did not have or could not afford. Plainly daft! By learning IT skills on Open Source solutions students can install the same software in the home/office as is being taught on the course thus enhancing the learning process. By encouraging students to use Open Source software an interest in alternative software in general is fostered. As a result, an interest in and the adoption of Linux is increasing amongst students. In my experience, our students who adopt Linux are not concerned about the ethical or philosophical advantages of Open Source but in the real-world advantages of on-line security and cost. As a result we have run a number of Linux courses in North Devon for those migrating from Windows and hope to increase the frequency of such courses as well as the numbers of students adopting Linux. -- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Generated by the contributors page in the members area at D+C GLUG http://www.dcglug.org.uk/members/list.php webmaster@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
