A null modem cable is the former. Its the serial version what is now seemingly called laplink. null modem gives you about 120Kbaud and I've seen laplink connected computers manage ~1.2 Mbaud. Perhaps I should explain why I wanted the 'exchange' box: I want to give away these machines and with luck never see them again. I have found that if you put in a network card and install and upgrade a system you can get problems later as things are not quite as good as you'd like and the system sometimes remembers the card even though its not there. So if the phone/modem cant connect then the removed ethernet card turns up as a ghost and causes problems. Never quite got to the bottom of the problem but theres a something called 'resolve' which I think so people can switch laptop connections 'at will'. My laptop occasionally remembers and configures my itself for the settings I had 'back up north' 2 1/2 years ago! If I can pretend to be the ISP over a modem then I can install a system, upgrade and configure the PC for them and send them on their merry way and they can hassle DCLUG should they need to .... That way I can revitalise an old PC and make a Linux convert for 1/2hr of my time!
