I think it's something to do with the encryption on the disc which is crackable but not so it can be played real time. You'd also need the encryption key, I think it's the key for the disc. No doubt though it'll be completely cracked in the future. You would also need a pretty high spec CPU. I've found that playing H264 video (which is one of the types of video they use on Bluray/HDDVD discs), it only uses one CPU core despite me having a quad core CPU. I think this is also being worked on. Suffice to say, my Phenom clocked at 2.48GHz will play 720p HD video. Not so sure it would do 1080p though on one core.
